St. Lawrence

St. Lawrence, one of the most revered martyrs of the early Church, was born in the third century in Spain. He became one of the seven deacons of Rome, serving under Pope Sixtus II. Deacons at that time were responsible for the Church’s material goods and for distributing alms to the poor, roles which Lawrence fulfilled with deep compassion and dedication.

During Emperor Valerian’s persecution of Christians in 258 AD, Pope Sixtus II was martyred, and Lawrence, as his chief deacon, was also targeted. Before his arrest, Lawrence distributed the Church’s wealth to the poor to prevent it from being seized by Roman authorities.

When summoned by the prefect of Rome and ordered to hand over the Church’s treasures, Lawrence presented the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the suffering, proclaiming them as the true treasures of the Church. Enraged by this act of defiance, the prefect ordered Lawrence’s execution.

According to tradition, Lawrence was martyred by being roasted alive on a gridiron. His faith and sense of humor remained strong to the end, with him reportedly telling his executioners, “Turn me over; I am done on this side.” St. Lawrence’s martyrdom took place on August 10, 258 AD, and his courage, faith, and dedication to the poor left a lasting legacy.
