St. Katharine Drexel was born in 1858 into a wealthy Philadelphia family but was raised with a deep sense of Christian responsibility. After witnessing firsthand the suffering of Native Americans and African Americans, she dedicated her life and fortune to serving them. She founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1891, a religious order focused on education and social justice. Katharine built dozens of schools across the United States, including Xavier University of Louisiana, the first Catholic university for African Americans. Despite opposition and financial challenges, she remained steadfast in her mission. She passed away in 1955, leaving behind a legacy of faith, education, and advocacy that continues to impact lives today.
Practical Lessons:
- Use Your Resources for Good: Whether it’s time, money, or talents, Katharine Drexel reminds us to invest in causes that uplift others. Support local schools, mentor someone, or donate to initiatives that promote justice and equality.
- Stand Up for the Marginalized: She worked tirelessly for Native and African Americans despite societal opposition. In today’s world, we can advocate for the vulnerable by listening, learning, and using our voices to promote fairness and inclusion.
- Put Faith into Action: Katharine didn’t just pray for change—she made it happen. Instead of waiting for someone else to fix problems, take small, concrete steps to serve in your parish, neighborhood, or workplace.
Prayer:
St. Katharine Drexel, you saw Christ in those society overlooked and responded with courage and generosity. Intercede for us, that we may use our resources wisely, stand up for the dignity of every person, and live out our faith in concrete ways. Help us to follow your example of love in action, trusting always in God’s providence. Amen.
